The Willink School

The Willink School

Click here for more information. We’re taking part in Sainsbury’s Active Kids 2017. And this means that from 25 January – 2 May, you can collect vouchers at Sainsbury’s and donate them to us by 30 June. We can then exchange them for new cooking and sports equipment, and experiences for our students.

A warm and belated welcome to all new year 7 parents and students

from the Willink Parent Teachers Association.
The Willink PTA is a group of enthusiastic parents and teachers who work hard to raise addition funding to support the school’s needs, and also to provide opportunities for parents to socialise and stay involved with the school.

Willink PTA Newsletter October 2016

Welcome to the new school year from the Willink Parent Teachers Association. We have a lot of events and activities planned this term. But we are always looking for new ideas and contributors so why not join the team?

2016/17 Goals

Each of the units costs £1600 for the whiteboard and projector. Our goal for 2017, after consulting with the school business manager and in line with key priorities for the school is to fund an additional three of these units, at a total cost of £4,800.

Projectors have become essential in the classroom: in many ways they have replaced chalk!  They allow pre-prepared resources to be displayed (and not always printed) with ease which has affected the way students learn and take notes.  An Interactive whiteboard serves as both a presentation tool and an opportunity for students to interact with their learning through technology.  Students like using them!  It helps them to engage with their learning in a different way.

We will continue to make small contributions and fund the requests of staff members where possible.

Quiz Night

One of the core ways that the PTA raise funds is by hosting events.  These events have a dual purpose. Of course we want to raise funds for the vital equipment and services to help our school. But we also want to put on events that brings parents, students and teachers together, and provide an opportunity to get together with friends and meet new ones.

The quiz night is a great opportunity for families to get together and compete as a family or as parents vs kids teams.

BYO drinks and snacks. Soft drinks will be available to buy.

Tickets are £3 for adults and £2 for students. Book yours at the finance office or email

Christmas Fair

Our Christmas fair is always a noisy, buzzy event with craft stalls, games, food and drink and usually a visit from Santa!  This year we’re getting in early on Saturday 19th November.

This is one of the biggest fundraisers of the year for the PTA and takes lots of organisation, so your support is very welcome.  We’re looking for:

·         Stallholders - crafts, gifts etc. (£10 and donation of a raffle prize)

·         Helpers on the day

·         People to sell raffle tickets

·         Local business or individuals to donate raffle prizes

Please contact the PTA if you are able to help

As usual we’ll be running a non-uniform day in advance and we really appreciate the donations you make that are vital to making this a successful event!

Fox and Hounds – fundraising event

This year, the The Fox and Hounds pub in Theale helped to kick start our fundraising this year by donating £500 from their Family Fun Day. The event took place Sunday the 11th of September and was well-attended by the local community and many staff from the Willink – enough for there to be a teachers’ horse race!

Lucky with a sunny day, it was a great success with the Wadworth Shire horses and the climbing wall keeping families busy. Many thanks to Jayne and her team at the Fox and Hounds for all their hard work and support.

Easy Fundraising

An way to donate money to the school fund is through an affiliate website called Easy Fundraising Every time you purchase goods from on-line retailers including Amazon, John Lewis as well as many broadband and mobile providers you can raise money for the school. And it doesn’t cost a penny. Simply visit the website and type ‘Willink’ in the search box and choose ‘Willink School Association - Reading, Burghfield Common’ as your chosen cause. Then off you go.  With Christmas shopping coming up it’s a great time to sign up and start donating.

Your donations

If you are unable to donate your time, but would like to make a contribution financially to the PTA’s fundraising activities, your donations are warmly welcomed.

Please contact our treasurer Garry Strange who can help.

The PTA committee

This year, following our AGM we are delighted to welcome two new year 7 parents, Lucy Bailey and Karen Donovan as our co-chairs, taking over from Fiona Jones and Paula Elsley who have done a sterling job for the past two years. Lucy also knows the Willink will, as she works as a Learning Support Assistant and pastoral support as well as a house co-ordinator. Their energy and insights will be invaluable to the committee.
However we still need more parents to get involved – and even if you can only spare a few hours to say help at the Christmas Fair it makes all the difference. We have some ambitious targets to meet this year so please do get involved and help out where you can.
With transition in mind we are looking for more year 7 and 8 parents to get involved.  If you can spare a few hours a term, please do join us!

How you can get involved

Our meetings are roughly each half term, and we try to mix it up with the occasional curry night or pub meeting, as well as regular meetings in the sixth form block. Mums, dads and teachers all welcome!

We know it’s easy once your children are at secondary school to take a step back from parental involvement.  But in today’s current environment, the PTA is fulfilling a vital role in helping to equip the school with services and equipment that help your child to have the best education possible.

If you can’t make the meetings but are happy to help out at events, we’d love to hear from you too.

We have an active closed FaceBook group to help communication between the committee, so if you’d like to join that or to get involved in other ways, please email
